Pastor Stephen Dodrill
Our focus this week will be upon the positive and negative power of our words using various texts from Proverbs.
The Value of Words
15 There is gold and abundance of costly stones, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.
Healing or Pain
18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks down the spirit.
Encouragement or Discouragement
25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.
Unity or Disunity
1 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
24 Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
27 A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire.
Proverbs 16:24, 27
9 Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.
12 A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech… 14 continually sowing discord.
Proverbs 6:12, 14
Righteousness or Unrighteousness
14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death. Proverbs 13:14
26 One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. Proverbs 12:26
5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love. 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse the kisses of an enemy.
Life or Death
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
